I'll come to a party, anywhere in the SF Bay area, with a friend
(whose pc is 1 of my 3 Gimps machines).  I'm in San Jose so
South Bay or the coast is closer but SF or North or East Bay
(probably) won't stop us.

Cheers... Russ

Hi,

I am verry sorry for you,
As long as you do not change your account information (including password)
the server will not be confused. I once had a software failure leading to
the same problems and took over some assignments from other teammembers who
decided to quit from the project.

Kind Regards, Martijn

Does anybody know how much more energy would be consumed by running Prime95
10 hours a day and on all workdays on 130 computers (would it be noticed on
the electricity bill). And is there any risk for viruses? Its because Im
trying to promote the program in my faculty of Science in Engineering, but
they arent really convinced. Also because they say there could be conflicts
with dlls, different versions, experiments of students and so on Also
they arent convinced that the program will never hinder the normal work of
students on the computers.

So any help and hints to get them install the program on those 130 PCs
would be welcome.

You probably mean "diald", although manual dialling seems best for home use to me.

They also don't know when not to drop - sometimes in the middle of doing something. Again, seems best for unattended machines.

This is all good information. Thanks.

To conclude then, I presume the "-c" method is the current "accepted" way of doing it. However, my suggestion of being able to run an arbitrary program has obviously now been heard by those who matter, so we can now wait to see whether such a feature appears in the next version/release.

Depends on, if the systems are on anyway, there will be no noticeable
difference. If they are switched on just to run prime95, whilst they
would otherwise be off, it is simply the Watts written on the back of
the computer times the amount of hours the computer is on.

No, the communication protocol does not allow anything being send other
than exponents, primes, factors and completion dates.

The dll's remain in the directory of prime95.

Everyone overlooking that many computers will naturally hold off
anything that is not absolutly neccessary.

http://www.mersenne.org/links.htm#studies provides some excellent data
you could use. Usually it is not about using arguments. Try to get them
used to it by running it with their OK on only two systems first. Write
a report on that after a couple of weeks, and then increase the number
of machines.

The extra power is certainly noticeable on its own, but perhaps less noticeable compared to the consumption of the rest of the systems and monitors etc.

If we say that a highly active CPU and memory subsystem running prime95 takes an extra 20 watts, then that's an extra 20Wx130 = 2.6kW! This is enough to heat a fair-sized room!

To my knowledge the power rating given on the PSU is actually significantly higher than that actually consumed, since this is a maximum. In fact a system power consumption of half what it written on the back is more normal unless there are a lot of internal devices.

In response to my November 18 suggestion,
"John R Pierce" <pierce@hogranch.com> listed some sites in Monterey.
So  far, however, only he and I have expressed interest in that location.
Unless at least five mailing list members express interest in Monterey
by December 1, we should go elsewhere.  Of course there is nothing to
preclude multiple gathering.

Within 24 hours, we should hear whether M#39 passes the unofficial
verification test.   If it passes, perhaps a gathering should be
held in the hometown of M#39's discoverer.

- - then it would follow we should meet in the Monterey area.  Santa Cruz is a
- - 45 minute drive from Monterey, silicon valley 90 minutes or so.  I'd be glad
- - to recommend a restaraunt for this, I've lived in the area since 1977..  One
- - of my favorite places down there is a superb Chinese restaraunt in Carmel,
- - but this would only be suitable for 8-12 people max.  There are lots of
- - other good places down there, or if folks wanted to drive a *few* miles, we
- - could meet in Moss Landing at Phil's Fish Market for the best chowder and
- - choppino on the west coast (and all kinda other fresh local seafoods as well
- - as some pasta dishs for those who won't eat fish).  Phil's is quite large,
- - and if we have a headcount, reserving the back area on a tuesday shouldn't
- - be too tough.  I think this would work for 20-30 folks there.

From: George Woltman <woltman@alum.mit.edu>
Subject: Mersenne: Mersenne prime #39

Hi all,

My computer has completed its unofficial verification.  It checked out!
GIMPS' fifth prime - and just as exciting as the first one.

Congratulations and thanks to all GIMPS contributors.  Everyone
of us had a hand in this remarkable find!

Now comes the hard part - waiting for the official verification due
around Dec 6th.

Newcomers to the mailing list may not be aware of how we handle
newly found primes.  I just completed step one - the optional verification
using a PC.  Step two is the slower, official verification with different
hardware and software.  Step three is publishing the find in a newspaper
or journal and since newspapers prefer an "exclusive" the exponent is not
announced until then.  Step four is announcing the exponent on this mailing
list, Chris Caldwell's web site, the mersenne.org web site, and usually a
Mersenne newsletter.  This happens the same morning that the newspaper
article is published.

We try to have the newspaper article "ready to go" once the official
verification completes.  Unfortunately, newspapers sometimes have funny
requirements (such as publishing in their weekly Science page rather than
the general news pages).

So, thanks for your continued patience.

Enjoying life,
George
